INSIDE COMPUTERS AND MOBILE DEVICE CHAPTER 5
A computer contains many electric, electronic, and mechanical components known as hardware. These components include input devices, output devices, a system unit, storage devices, and communications devices. An input device is any hardware component that allows you to enter data and instructions into a computer. Five widely used input devices are the keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner, and Web cam. A computer keyboard contains keys you press to enter data into the computer. For security purposes, some keyboards include a fingerprin reader, which allows you to work with the computer only if your fingerprint is recognized. Mouse, you control movement of a small symbol on the screen, called the pointer, and you make selections from the screen. A microphone allows you to speak into the computer. A scanner converts printed material (such as text and pictures) into a form the computer can use.An output device is any hardware component that conveys information to one or more people. Three commonly used output devices are a printer, a monitor, and speakers. A printer produces text and graphics on a physical medium such as paper. A monitor displays text, graphics, and videos on a screen. Speakers allow you to hear music, voice, and other audio (sounds).
There are many different processors on the market. There are two primary manufacturers of computer microprocessors. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) lead the market in terms of speed and quality. Intel's desktop CPUs include Celeron, Pentium and Core. AMD's desktop processors include Sempron, Athlon and Phenom. Intel makes Celeron M, Pentium M and Core mobile processors for notebooks. AMD makes mobile versions of its Sempron and Athlon, as well as the Turion mobile processor which comes in Ultra and Dual-Core versions. Both companies make both single-core and multi-core processors.
Cloud computing has been around for approximately two decades and despite the data pointing to the business efficiencies, cost benefits and competitive advantages it holds over the old way of business, a large portion of the business community continues to operate the old way.; According to a study by the International Data Group, 69 percent of businesses are already using cloud technology in one capacity or another, and 18 percent say they plan to implement cloud-computing solutions at some point. At the same time, Dell reports that companies that invest in big data, cloud, mobility, and security enjoy up to 53 percent faster revenue growth than their competitors.
Computer memory is technically any type of electronic storage. Without it and without access to it, a computer is just a useless box. From startup to shutdown, and all processes in between, a computer relies on several types of memory in order to function. At the core of the computer is the central processing unit or CPU, the source of control that runs all programs and instructions. In order to function, computers use two types of memory: primary and secondary. Computer is the main storage is the primary memory, and data and programs are stored in secondary memory. have a large capacity for forgetting information! That is because most computers make use of what is called random access memory (RAM). This memory is used only when the computer is completing a task.
